A friend of mine found this little green fella (#1594) somewhere near Laramie, Wyoming. Since then, I've had him in my purse looking for the right place to drop him off. Together, we traveled by car across the country, starting in Wyoming, trundling through wildfire smoke in Utah, to the eerie dark beaches of Oregon, and up into the rainforest of western Washington. #1594 was still in my purse as I returned across the country, down through Colorado and New Mexico, across the South, and home to Tennessee. And he was still in my purse when I took off again to New Hampshire for what I thought would be a new job and a new chapter. I thought I'd be staying in New Hampshire for a while, and that maybe little #1594 would find somewhere to settle down too, waiting for his next adventure... but life is funny. Just when I thought I knew how the future would unfold, it decided to refold itself up and pivot in a new direction. I found myself back in Tennessee, reorienting myself to the strangeness of life. And the whole time, #1594 was moving through that strangeness with me, safe in my purse, where I'd almost forgotten about him. I'm glad I ended up back in Tennessee, and as odd as all this travel has been, it's been incredibly fulfilling too. I'm grateful to this little rock for helping me figure out this transitionary time -- and maybe a bit of Ryan's adventurous nature was helping me enjoy the ride. I'm grateful to have learned about his own journey. For that reason, it felt right to part ways with #1594 after many months together on a bench in my hometown of Norris, TN. I set him down in a spot where could overlook our Commons, which has just started to get green with spring, and as I did so, I saw that the bench had a rather appropriate dedication: "Do what you love." Thank you for the chance to travel with #1594, and to learn about the life and adventures of Ryan. P.S. All that bumping around in my purse scuffed off some of the writing, so #1594 got a new paint job, with a slightly different green.
